Wildwood Agile Learning Community is a non-profit, self-directed learning collective/club program located in Watauga County NC. We serve families and young people who wish to engage in collaborative, choice-based learning within a diverse community. At Wildwood ALC everyone is both a learner and a teacher, everyone has a meaningful voice in creating our community and everyone is fully valued for who they are. Our mixed-age learning environment embraces choice and freedom along with collaboration between peers, facilitators, and the local community.

We serve families from all backgrounds, and we never want financial need to keep a child from getting the education they desire and deserve.

Wildwood is open Sept.- May. Members attend 2 or 3 days a week (Tu, W, Th) starting at age 6/7 through teens.

Self-Directed Education at Wildwood
________________________

Education is the sum of everything a person learns that enables that person to

live a satisfying and meaningful life.

Self-Directed Education is education that derives from the self-chosen activities and life experiences of the person becoming educated, whether or not those activities were chosen deliberately for the purpose of education. In other words … learning is happening all the time, whether we intend to or not. At Wildwood, this may include organized workshops or offerings, but mostly it comes from everyday life, as people pursue their interests with others in community. There are no tests, grades, or required curriculum at Wildwood. Classes/Workshops are interest based and provided by those within our group and in the larger community.

Humans are naturally curious about the world … we are literally wired to learn. At Wildwood ALC, we aim to create the environmental conditions that maximize the ability to learn from our natural drives.

***Legally, all school-aged children in the US must be registered in a public, private or home-school. As we only meet 3 days a week, participation at Wildwood does not satisfy federal compulsory schooling requirements, therefore all children must be also registered in a home-school or other program. We are happy to answer any questions you have about this.

“All I am saying…can be summed up in two words: Trust Children. Nothing could be more simple, or more difficult. Difficult because to trust children we must first learn to trust ourselves, and most of us were taught as children that we could not be trusted.” ~ John Holt, How Children Learn (1967)
